How To Prepare Furniture For Chalk Mineral Paint Application
The amount of prep you do for Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral Paint is really up to you and your desired finished look. For example, if you want a super smooth modern look, it is best to do a little sanding and prep work. However, if you want a shabby, distressed, more laid back finish, you can forgo some of the prep.
To learn more about prepping furniture for painting check out: How To Prep Furniture For Painting. But the basic steps are cleaning, sanding which is optional, any repair of holes or scratches, and dusting.
And, since this paint is made to adhere to so many surfaces, you do not have to sand. I typically do at least a scuff sanding. Because a little sanding will help your paint stick better. And we are not talking about whipping out the electric sander. Read more about sanding at: How To Sand Furniture Before Painting.
But one prep step I never skip is cleaning. A good quick cleaning is really important. Oils, grease, stains and dirt will interfere with the paint’s ability to stick to the surface. I use Dixie Belle’s own White Lightening Cleaner or Krud Kutter Spray to clean. Then I rinse with clean clear water and a clean rag.
Next, I go over the piece with a tack cloth to remove any of those no-see animal furs, dust, or fuzzes that tend to float around in the air.

Consider A Primer
You may be thinking, “Primer – this is supposed to be low prep paint!” But primer can make a huge difference.
Whether or not you need a primer depends on mainly two things:
- the paint color you are working with – is is light colored or white?
- the original finish/stain of the piece – red stains like cherry and mahogany will bleed through.
- and lastly, is your project slick like a laminate, glass or veneer? If so, you’ll need a bonding primer.
A good primer makes all the difference in many projects. No one wants to work hard to paint a project piece and then have stains pop through your finish! That is so disappointing. You can prevent that with a good primer.

But Dixie Belle makes a great water-based primer called BOSS and it comes in clear, gray, and white.
Another primer to consider is Dixie Belle Slick Stick, which is a bonding primer. Bonding primers work to help paint adhere to slick surfaces, like laminate and glass.
Another good choice for some pieces is Zinsser BIN Shellac-Based Primer in white. This comes in spray and brush or roll-on formulas. However, follow safety precautions with this primer because if is oil-based.

How To Paint With Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Okay, so next up is the fun stuff. Let’s talk about painting. This paint is really easy to use. It has a great consistency, not too thick and not too thin.
You can really use any brush. Synthetic brushes, like the Dixie Belle Synthetic Brushes, will usually give you the smoothest finish. But natural bristly brushes work excellently with this paint also. Learn more about brushes in this post: Best Brushes For Painting Furniture
It goes on easy and spreads nicely. Use a misting bottle to smooth out as you paint. The paint is extremely self leveling and has no foul odors.
Coverage is really good also. Often one coat will do it, but I most often find two works best for me, especially if a more opaque coverage is desired. Allow each coat to dry at least one hour before applying the next.

How To Seal And Protect Furniture Painted With Dixie Belle Chalk Paints
Lastly once you’ve painted your furniture, applying a sealant is best. Yes, this is optional, as this paint does not require a topcoat. However, adding a topcoat or sealant will really ensure a long-lasting, durable and beautiful finish.
And a big bonus is that applying a topcoat can add a bit of sheen if desired. This depends on the topcoat product you choose. This can range from wax to poly clear coats or even a product like Hemp Oil.
Most often, I seal my project pieces with Dixie Belle Clear Coat in Satin or Dixie Belle Gator Hide. Both of these are excellent products. Learn more about protecting your finish in these pasts:
I also use waxes on some projects, especially when I want to add an aging effect. Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax is a great option for adding depth and character. It comes in brown, gray, and black.
Also clear wax is available if you want to seal your whole project with wax instead of clear coat.
