For furniture painters looking for a high-quality, hassle-free painting experience, Dixie Belle Silk Paint is a game-changer. There are several things that make this paint special. However, three reasons sum up it’s special qualities:
- Self-Leveling Properties: This term refers to the paint’s ability to distribute itself evenly over the surface after application, resulting in a smooth, brush stroke-free finish. As the paint dries, any ridges, bumps, or lines caused by the application process gradually disappear as the paint flows and settles into an even layer. This property not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the painted furniture but also simplifies the painting process, particularly for beginners who may struggle with achieving a uniform coat.
- Resistance to common issues: This paint is resistant to water, mildew, and grease, making it perfect for painting furniture pieces that demand durability. It is designed to withstand the challenges of daily use. This means that furniture painted with Silk can retain its vibrant look and smooth finish for an extended period, even in conditions that would typically damage or dull other paints
- Simplified painting process: And finally, Silk Paint stands out with its unique formulation which eliminates the need for multiple steps often associated with traditional chalk paint. This feature provides an all-in-one product. This makes for a simple painting experience that is ideal for both beginning and experienced painters. We’ll talk more about the all-in-one feature in a bit.
How To Prep Furniture For Silk Paint Application
Before applying Dixie Belle Silk Paint, it’s crucial to prepare your furniture correctly to ensure a your finish will last for a very long time.
- Cleaning: Start by cleaning your furniture piece thoroughly. Remove any dust, grime, or oily residues. Use Dixie Belle’s White Lightning Cleaner, Dawn Dish soap and water or Krud Kutter Degreaser Spray. Follow by a wipe down or rinse with clean water. A bit more about prepping furniture for painting: How To Prep Furniture For Painting.
- Sanding: Lightly sand it with a 220-grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough texture. This process will provide better adhesion for the paint. This is called a scuff sanding. To learn more about sanding read: How To Sand Furniture Before Painting.
- Repairing: Check the furniture for any cracks, chips, or dents. If present, fill them with a quality wood filler, then sand smooth once dry. I often use Minwax High Performance Wood Filler.
- Priming: (optional) Theoretically we shouldn’t mention priming when talking about Silk Paint because it is an all-in-one paint which includes primer. However, you can primer if the piece is laminate or slick like a veneer. Learn more about priming here at: Primer For Painted Furniture.
- Wipe down: Finally, wipe down the furniture with a damp cloth to remove any residual dust before starting to paint. And I often use a tack cloth to remove dust and animal fur. Tack Cloths are so very helpful to have on hand when painting furniture.
Remember, a well-prepared surface is key to achieving a professional, long-lasting finish.

Painting with Dixie Belle Silk
When it comes to painting with Dixie Belle Silk Paint, your choice of brush can significantly impact the look and finish. Dixie Belle Paint Company recommends the use of synthetic brushes with Silk Paint.

A few of my favorite synesthetic brushes to use with Silk:
They tend to leave fewer brush marks compared to natural bristle brushes and work well with the self-leveling properties of Silk Paint.
Begin painting with even strokes for a smooth appearance. With Silk it’s important to drag the brush lightly in one direction. It’s best not to back brush over the strokes too many times.
Most furniture pieces require two coats of Silk Paint. But certainly a third coat is an options. It’s important to let each coat dry completely before applying the next one. Recoat after two hours.
Remember, patience is key to achieving the perfect finish. Don’t rush the drying process. Before using the pieces for anything heavy, let the paint cure to ensure a resilient and durable finish.

Dixie Belle Silk Paint Is An All-In-One Paint
Dixie Belle’s Silk Paint is an all-in-one paint, embodying a multitude of properties that make it a standout choice in the world of furniture painting. Two of its key features are the built-in primer and built-in top coat.
Below I’ll list features of all-in-one paints but you can also read more at: Best All-In-One Paint.
The advantages of using an all-in-one paint are that it:
- eliminates the need for a separate topcoat or sealant.
- a durable paint product that it is inherently resistant to water and mildew.
- and it has a built-in primer so you don’t have to worry about stains bleeding through
This essentially means that with Silk Paint, you are getting a primer, paint, and topcoat all in one top quality product!

How To Clean Furniture Painted With Silk Paint
When it comes to cleaning furniture that has been painted with Dixie Belle Silk Paint, the process is fairly straightforward due to the paint’s water-resistant and mildew-resistant properties.
For regular cleaning, lightly dust the furniture using a soft, dry cloth. If the piece needs a more thorough cleaning, use a lightly dampened cloth to wipe down the surfaces.
It’s recommended to avoid harsh chemical cleaners, as they can potentially damage the paint finish. Instead, if you come across any tough stains or spots, use a mild soap mixed with water, making sure to rinse thoroughly and dry promptly.
Always remember to handle your painted furniture with care to maintain its beautiful finish.

Hi, enjoy your emails.
My question is, when I use silk paint in the dark colors, after the furniture has cued I still get a chalky look from fingerprints. Any suggestions?
Hi Janet,
I have noticed this too from time to time. And, it’s kind of strange because Silk Paint isn’t really a chalk based paint. But I think with the dark colors in that eggshell matte finish you will see some fingerprints and such. You could try a gentle rubbing with the Dixie Belle Finishing Pad. It is designed to gently smooth and buff. It is not a sanding pad, just a buffing pad. If the chalky prints really bother you an option would be to apply a clear coat to give the painted finish a little more shine so that it reflects light and fingerprints don’t show. This sounds counter intuitive though to put a clear coat on Silk but I think it all depends on what you desire the finished look to be. If you like the protection of Silk Paint but want a little more shine, I think it’s a good option even though it’s an extra step. If I do clear coat a dark colored paint, I use Dixie Belle Satin Clear Coat and I tint the clear coat with just a tiny hint of the dark colored paint I used. That way it really reduces streaking of the clear coat finish. I hope this helps answer your question and I really appreciate you reading my blog post. Thanks so much! Abbey
