Before And After Nightstand Makeover
Next I’ll share a few nightstand makeovers.
- First up, this is a nightstand I painted with regular Dixie Belle chalk mineral paint. For this makeover, I used a combination of Colonel Mustard and Buttercream. and, I also used a Redesign With Prima Stick-n-Style Stencil to further embellish the nightstand. Decoupage Nightstand Makeover
Here are examples of two nightstand makeovers.
- Silk Paint And Decoupage Nightstand Makeover – The first furniture flip features a rustic look with Hampton Olive Silk Paint and a decoupage paper top.
- Silk Paint Deep Seas – This second makeover features Silk Paint in the color Deep Seas, a gorgeous navy paint color. It also features a decoupage paper top and a gold stenciled design on the side.
Chalk mineral paint products are water-based and they work well with other embellishment products like stencils, decoupage papers, and gold accenting products like gold leaf.

This dresser was the first furniture I painted using any type of DIY paint product. This was an old dresser and nightstand set that belonged to my grandma. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White. Then I sealed with Annie Sloan Clear Wax and put on new hardware.

Best Paint Colors For Dressers & Other Bedroom Furniture
This is a tough question to answer, and a very individual one. Honestly, it totally depends on one’s preference.
Some may love whites and neutrals like gray and wood tones, while others may want to go deep and moody with navy and black paint colors. Yet others may be ready for some color with bright pinks, purples and other bold colors. There are honestly so many colors to choose from!
And you can always consider the best of both worlds, having some neutral wood tones with some pops of color on the same furniture piece.

For the purposes of this post, I’ll focus mainly on Dixie Belle Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint and how I used it in a makeover, painting my old plain brown wood bedroom furniture.
I used Baja Gray paint, which is a beautiful cool gray color. I chose Silk because I wanted an easy to use product with great durability.
The two pieces of furniture I painted included a long dresser and an armoire. This dresser top particularly sees quite a bit of use, so I did apply a two coats of Gator Hide topcoat for an extra protective layer, but it was not totally necessary.

Scuff Sanding Before Painting Bedroom Furniture
But typically if the furniture is in good condition and not in need of any wood filler or major sanding, just do a quick scuff sand.
Scuff sanding is a quick sanding with a fine grit such as 220 to help take down any shine. This quick scuff sanding will help your paint adhere.

Clean Before Painting Bedroom Furniture
Once done with sanding use a mild cleaner to remove any dirt and gunk that might have accumulated on the surface. I usually use either White Lightning Cleaner or Krud Kutter spray-on cleaner.
Then rinse clean with clear water. Once your furniture is prepped, you can start painting with Dixie Belle Silk Paint.
Applying the Dixie Belle Silk Paint To Your Bedroom Furniture
Applying Dixie Belle Silk Paint is easy and requires minimal effort for maximum results. Just apply the paint in thin coats of using a synthetic brush in long strokes. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying any additional coats.

Most projects require two coats. This paint has great coverage! You’ll be amazed at the coverage with even just the first coat.
And this paint dries pretty fast, but wait at least 2 hours between coats.
